Hiking Misery Ridge At Smith Rock With Brad's Ashes

Thursday morning we drove to Smith Rock State Park.  When Brad, Cindy and the kids were here in 2010 we hiked the strenuous Misery Ridge trail.  Brad wasn't able to make it to the top, so he turned around and went back to the car to wait for us.  When he passed away last July, Cindy told us she wanted to spread some of his ashes at the top of Misery Ridge since he had wanted to make it to the top the next time they came to visit.

Here's Cindy at the trail sign with Brad's ashes.

There's stunning scenery everywhere you look on this hike.

Spenser, Cindy and Delaney made it through the worst of the hike.

We watched these people make their way over to Monkey Face.

Hiking along the backside made for some nice shots with the sun on the other side.

The water level is so low the exposed rocks were white with mineral deposits.

When we finished the 3.4 mile hike it was 93 degrees.  We were so happy to get back to the cars air-conditioning and ready for some lunch and cold drinks.

Visitors And A Day At Elk Lake

Spenser, Ashley, Delaney & Cindy arrived at our house around noon on Monday July 27th.  Here they are that evening enjoying appetizers with Kelly.

The next day we went up to Elk Lake with Cindy, Spenser, Delaney, Ashley and visiting Antarctic friend Paul Bernasconi, his wife Michelle and their three daughters Katherine, Anna & Sarah.  The Bernasconi's have been exploring the country in their RV since leaving their New York home in late June.

We rented three paddle boards for the day and everyone got some time paddling around the lake.  Here's Spenser.

Kelly enjoying some beach time with the Bernasconi's dog Marli.

John Keller mailed us a few bags of our favorite potato chips...Humpty Dumpty BBQ!!!  We only ever get them when we're out in Maine, so it was a real treat to have some at the lake.

Dave was practicing some headstands on his board.

Marli finally got a turn on the paddle board as well.

That evening we ate dinner at 10 Barrel Brewing.  Here's Paul with a round of samplers.

The next day was spent shopping in the Old Mill District and downtown Bend with the Gilbert's and Ashely.  Here we are ready for dinner at Greg's Grill.

A Camping Trip to the Redwoods

Friday July 24th, we drove to Crescent City, CA to meet Cindy, Delaney and Spenser Gilbert and Ashley Smucker.  They had driven an RV across the country from Elkhart, IN and we're making their last stop at the Redwoods before coming up to stay with us in Bend.

After meeting them at the campground, we went down to the beach to get our toes in the sand.  Here's Kelly, Ashley, Spenser, Dave, Cindy and Delaney.

The next day we took off to see the Redwoods and stopped at an overlook to see the view.

We ended up doing a hike through the Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park.

Here we are standing in front of "Big Tree"

Well, we were actually in our tent behind the RV.

Kelly loves his s'mores!

Dave doesn't care for s'mores so he was melting his chocolate on a peanut butter chunk cookie with monster cookie crumbles on top.

We wanted to see what it would look like to pitch our tent on top of a redwood stump.  Pretty cool, but we didn't sleep up there.
