Under the Ross Sea Ice

Last Wednesday night we hiked out to Hut Point, then on to the Sea Ice to visit the Observation Tube.  It's a long metal cylinder that's suspended down a large hole drilled into the ice.  You descend down the tube onto a viewing platform to see the ocean floor and up to the bottom of the ice.

It's a snug fit.  Dave's the first one down.

Kelly climbing down the tube, with Dave on the viewing platform.

Here's a shot of Dave way down there.

Kelly climbing down.

The white colored spot is a Jellyfish.

Under the ice, the tiny white specks are Krill.

Looking back down at Dave.

Weddell Seal near by.
