Bend's Pole, Pedal Paddle

Last weekend was the Pole Pedal Paddle here in Bend. It's a race for individuals, pairs or teams and there were over 2000 participants. It starts out on Mt. Bachelor where the skiers race down the mountain, followed by an 8K cross country ski. After that they bike from the mountain to Bend, which is 22 miles away. Once they reach town they do a 10K run before switching to kayak or canoe and paddling the 1.5 mile course. From the river they do a 1/3 mile sprint to the finish line at the Les Schwab Amphitheatre in the Old Mill District. It was an extremely warm day for the race with temperatures reaching 97 degrees.

Two sections of the race went right by our neighborhood, so we were able to sit out near the road and watch the bikers ride by as well as watch the runners come up the trail. Their turnaround point was at the entrance to our subdivision.

After watching the race for a few hours at our place, we rode our bikes down to the finish line and spent the remainder of the afternoon enjoying the festivities with friends.
Chelsea Clinton happened to be at the event campaigning for her Mom, so Dave & our friend Amy got their picture taken with her. Dave has already been scolded for not wearing a shirt when he met her, so no comments are necessary. It was a hot 97 degrees after all!
