A Visit with Friends from Antarctica

Last Sunday three friends from Antarctica rode in to Sisters, where we picked them up and brought them back to Bend for two nights. Geoff & Danielle are biking from the west coast to the east coast. They started in Florence, OR and will be ending the trip in Maine. Our friend Gift started the trip with them, but will stopping when they get to Denver. Our friend Amy who lives in Bend is riding from here to Denver as well. Here's Kelly with Gift, Amy, Danielle & Geoff at our house.

Here they are in Sisters where they were getting ready to head out again. Unfortunately it was a cold and rainy morning.

Bend's Pole, Pedal Paddle

Last weekend was the Pole Pedal Paddle here in Bend. It's a race for individuals, pairs or teams and there were over 2000 participants. It starts out on Mt. Bachelor where the skiers race down the mountain, followed by an 8K cross country ski. After that they bike from the mountain to Bend, which is 22 miles away. Once they reach town they do a 10K run before switching to kayak or canoe and paddling the 1.5 mile course. From the river they do a 1/3 mile sprint to the finish line at the Les Schwab Amphitheatre in the Old Mill District. It was an extremely warm day for the race with temperatures reaching 97 degrees.

Two sections of the race went right by our neighborhood, so we were able to sit out near the road and watch the bikers ride by as well as watch the runners come up the trail. Their turnaround point was at the entrance to our subdivision.

After watching the race for a few hours at our place, we rode our bikes down to the finish line and spent the remainder of the afternoon enjoying the festivities with friends.
Chelsea Clinton happened to be at the event campaigning for her Mom, so Dave & our friend Amy got their picture taken with her. Dave has already been scolded for not wearing a shirt when he met her, so no comments are necessary. It was a hot 97 degrees after all!

Family Time in Indiana

Although it's been a month since we were in Indiana visiting Dave's family, we wanted to share some photos of the time spent there. We flew to O'Hare on April 10th and drove a rental car to Goshen. During the visit we got to spend some quality time with nearly everyone in the family.

Kelly flew home on April 22nd and Dave spent four more days to be with his Mom during her Cochlear Implant surgery in. Hopefully the surgery will prove successful and she'll regain the hearing in her right ear.

Here's a photo of Dave with his two brothers Gary & Steve
