It's tradition after each holiday meal here that we walk to Hut Point. We had a small group this time, but it was a warm and beautiful day, so we hung out for quite awhile and enjoyed the sunshine. Warm to us was 32 degrees and with the sun shining we were able to wear light weight jackets. Kelly at Hut Point Dave & Pam at Hut Point
We had our Thanksgiving celebration here on Saturday the 24th. We had our pre-dinner cocktails with friends at 3:00 and our Thanksgiving meal at 5:00. We were treated to turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, asparagus with sauteed red onions and red peppers, salad, rolls and peeled shrimp & cocktail sauce. Dessert was pecan pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, a flourless chocolate cake and many other things we didn't have room for. It was quite the feast and our galley staff did a great job. Last weekend we had a going away party in our room for our friend Charlie. He's in the Air Force reserves and will be leaving soon for a five month rotation in Iraq. He left McMurdo Tuesday the 13th, so we had the party for him on Saturday the 10th. He was working in Helo Ops this season and got to fly around to wonderful places as part of his job that most of us only dream about seeing. He brought us some ice from the Hoare Glacier in the Dry Valleys to make our gin & tonics with. We call it Jesus ice here, because it's about 2000 years old. We had a great time with Charlie while he was here and we certainly miss him. Here are some photos from the party and a chance to see what our room looks like Lucas, Lisa, Charlie & Gift Lisa, Charlie & Gift Danielle, Dave, Shannon & Alec Dave, Josh & Alec
The big news down here lately is that Ann Curry is here from the Today Show. She and her crew have been here for the past 10 days taping segments for their Ends of the Earth specials. They also did three live broadcasts and we were there when they were filming. Dave was holding a sign that read "Welcome to the Family Anson Born 11/02/07" for my niece's latest baby. The other side read "Go Ducks" for the University of Oregon Football team who are currently ranked 3rd in the nation. Ann Curry is an alumnus of Oregon and when she saw the sign Dave was holding she got all excited and ran over and gave him a hug. She asked if he was from Oregon and took the time to pose for the picture shown here. It was an extremely cold and windy evening, but we've had such bad weather the past week that it was actually one of the nicest days we had.
We went down to the town Halloween party a few weeks ago to check out the costumes and hang out with friends. We didn't dress up (because we're lame), but we did enjoying seeing those who did. Here are some photos of friends and people we work with.
