Camping at Elk Lake

Sunday night we went camping at Elk Lake with our friends Dave & Norman. Elk Lake is in the Cascade Lakes region and an easy 25 minute drive from home.

Rafting the Deschutes River

This past weekend Dave went rafting in Maupin with some friends from Antarctica and a few of their friends. This is the third year in a row for this trip and we always have a great time. For some reason crazy outfits are always a must and this year was no exception.

Crater Lake

Thursday the 22nd, we drove to Crater Lake National Park. The lake was formed about 7,000 years ago when the Volcano Mt. Mazama erupted and collapsed. The lake is 6 miles wide and 1,932 ft. deep, the deepest lake in the United States. Since the lake is so deep it absorbs every color of the spectrum except for blue, which it reflects back causing the incredible color of the lake. We never get tired of showing friends and family this beautiful site.

Smith Rock State Park

Monday the 20th we took Charlie & Jan on a hike up Misery Ridge at Smith Rock State Park. Smith Rock is a half hour drive north of Bend and has some of the best rock climbing in the west. There are also some great hiking trails and beautiful scenery.

Saturday the 18th we had visitors from San Antonio arrive, Charlie & Jan. Charlie worked with us in Antarctica and he and Jan decided to come up for a little vacation to Central Oregon for 5 days. The day they arrived was the second day of the Bend Brewfest. There were 30 different breweries represented this year. We spent the evening there with our friends Tom, Paul, Norman, Dave & Mindy so they could all meet Charlie & Jan.

Weekend in Reno

After our hike we drove to the nearby Clair Tappaan Lodge where Liisa's Father was the Manager back in the 50's. It's now owned by the Sierra Club and they were having a fund raising silent auction that afternoon. We spent a few hours there checking out the lodge, the surrounding grounds and enjoyed wine and cheese during the auction.

From there we drove to Lake Tahoe where we met Patrick that evening for dinner. We spent a little time along the beach while we waited for our table and enjoyed a nice meal at Jason's Beachside Grille.
Sunday we checked out more of Reno and the surrounding areas. That evening we had a wonderful lamb chop dinner at Liisa's Mom's house and thoroughly enjoyed our last evening in Reno.

Weekend in Reno

Last Friday we drove down to Reno to visit our friends Patrick & Liisa and to check out the area. It was a 6-1/2 hour drive and most of it was new territory for Dave. When we arrived Liisa was at work, so we had a nice catch up visit with Patrick for a few hours.

That evening we checked out a local brew pub and the city. It was Hot August Nights weekend, so there were muscle cars and hot rods all over the place. Kelly enjoyed seeing them, but they were just a nuisance to Dave. We walked through the casino area, but neither of us had any desire to check them out.

Saturday Patrick had to work, so Kelly & I, along with Liisa and her Sister Maija drove up to Donner Pass and climbed Donner Peak. It was a beautiful day and a nice hike.
