Christmas Morning in Our Room

We had a nice long weekend for Christmas. The town was given off Monday and Tuesday for the holidays and it just so happened that our regular days off are Sunday and Wednesday, which gave us a very special four days off in a row. Although we did spend a lot of time relaxing in our room, we also attended a lot of social functions.

Sunday evening we hosted a cocktail party in our room for Kelly's cargo team. Later that evening we went to the town Christmas Party where we spent many hours visiting with friends and listening to good music.

Monday morning we gathered at Hut 10 with people from work for a White Elephant Gift Exchange. We had a lot of fun with that and Kelly ended up with one of the best gifts, a 1/4" piece of metal in the shape of Antarctica, made by a guy we work with.

Later that day we gathered with friends for cocktails at 3:00 prior to our Delicious Christmas dinner at 5:00. There was King Crab & Duck, but we both ate the Beef Wellington, which was fantastic!

Christmas morning we had our gift exchange in the room and spent the remainder of the day relaxing and watching movies. Here are a few pictures of us with our booty.

More Pressure Ridge Pictures

Scott Base Pressure Ridges

Last Sunday we went on a tour of the pressure ridges at Scott Base, the New Zealand base 3 kilometers away. It was a sunny warm day, by warm I'm saying upper 30's to low 40's. The pressure ridges are formed by the Ross Ice Shelf meeting the ice of the Ross Sea. It's sort of like plate tecktonics and the results are beautiful. Check out the pictures and see for yourself.

Scott's Hut Cape Evans, Ross Island, Antarctica

These are some pictures from a resent trip to the British explorer Robert Falcon Scott's hut. In 1910 he sailed from New Zealand and erected this hut for his attempt to the South Pole in 1911.

Post Thanksgiving Dinner Walk to Hut Point

It's tradition after each holiday meal here that we walk to Hut Point. We had a small group this time, but it was a warm and beautiful day, so we hung out for quite awhile and enjoyed the sunshine. Warm to us was 32 degrees and with the sun shining we were able to wear light weight jackets.

Thanksgiving Dinner & Pre-Dinner Cocktails

We had our Thanksgiving celebration here on Saturday the 24th. We had our pre-dinner cocktails with friends at 3:00 and our Thanksgiving meal at 5:00. We were treated to turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, asparagus with sauteed red onions and red peppers, salad, rolls and peeled shrimp & cocktail sauce. Dessert was pecan pie, pumpkin pie, pumpkin cheesecake, a flourless chocolate cake and many other things we didn't have room for. It was quite the feast and our galley staff did a great job.

Charlie's Going Away Party

Last weekend we had a going away party in our room for our friend Charlie. He's in the Air Force reserves and will be leaving soon for a five month rotation in Iraq. He left McMurdo Tuesday the 13th, so we had the party for him on Saturday the 10th. He was working in Helo Ops this season and got to fly around to wonderful places as part of his job that most of us only dream about seeing. He brought us some ice from the Hoare Glacier in the Dry Valleys to make our gin & tonics with. We call it Jesus ice here, because it's about 2000 years old. We had a great time with Charlie while he was here and we certainly miss him. Here are some photos from the party and a chance to see what our room looks like

The Today Show

The big news down here lately is that Ann Curry is here from the Today Show. She and her crew have been here for the past 10 days taping segments for their Ends of the Earth specials. They also did three live broadcasts and we were there when they were filming. Dave was holding a sign that read "Welcome to the Family Anson Born 11/02/07" for my niece's latest baby. The other side read "Go Ducks" for the University of Oregon Football team who are currently ranked 3rd in the nation. Ann Curry is an alumnus of Oregon and when she saw the sign Dave was holding she got all excited and ran over and gave him a hug. She asked if he was from Oregon and took the time to pose for the picture shown here. It was an extremely cold and windy evening, but we've had such bad weather the past week that it was actually one of the nicest days we had.
